Google AI Mode crosses 1 billion users in its first year
Google I/O 2026 confirmed AI Mode at 1 billion monthly users with queries doubling every quarter, Gemini 3.5 Flash as the new default, and autonomous search agents launching for Pro subscribers. Here's the GEO read.
1 billion monthly AI Mode users in its first year. Queries doubling every quarter. Google Search revenue reached $63.07B in Q4 2025, up 17% year-over-year. Google I/O 2026
At Google I/O 2026, Elizabeth Reid — head of Google Search — announced that AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users in its first year, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch. The announcement confirmed what practitioners had already seen in their traffic data: AI-mediated search is no longer a feature — it is the default search behaviour for a significant and growing share of Google's user base.
What was announced at I/O 2026
The headline announcements from the Search track at Google I/O 2026:
One year after debut. Queries doubling every quarter. Google claims Search queries are at an all-time high as AI makes users search more.
The new default model in AI Mode globally, described as "frontier performance for agents and coding."
Described as "the biggest upgrade to our Search box in over 25 years," now with AI input support beyond text.
Autonomous information agents that work in the background 24/7, scanning the web and notifying users when conditions they set are met. Launching for AI Pro & Ultra subscribers.

The scale context
One billion monthly AI Mode users in the first year puts this on par with Google Search's own early adoption trajectory. For comparison: ChatGPT took roughly two years to reach 900 million weekly active users (disclosed February 2026). Google's Gemini standalone app reached 750 million monthly active users by Q4 2025. Search queries reaching an all-time high despite (or because of) AI integration challenges the narrative that AI kills search volume — at least on Google's own platform.
The revenue picture confirms users are not abandoning Google: Google Search revenue reached $63.07 billion in Q4 2025, a 17% year-over-year increase, with annual revenue exceeding $400 billion for the first time. Google's AI integration is generating more search revenue, not less — at least in the current phase.
Search agents: the agentic layer arrives
The most strategically significant announcement for GEO practitioners is the introduction of autonomous information agents. These agents run in the background, continuously scanning the web for conditions a user has set — "alert me when my favourite athlete announces a collab," or more commercially relevant, "find apartment listings that match my criteria and notify me when new ones appear."
This is the early form of what Adobe labelled Agentic Search Optimization (ASO) in its Semrush acquisition framing. The question for brands becomes: when a Google agent is continuously monitoring the web on a user's behalf, scanning for products and services that match their criteria — is your brand part of what the agent finds and recommends? The answer depends on the same GEO signals that govern AI Overview citation, but with higher stakes because agent recommendations may trigger direct transactions.
"The goal is no longer just to rank. It is to be named — and increasingly, to be chosen by agents operating without human review."

GEO implications
Google's I/O 2026 announcements formally confirm three things GEO practitioners should internalize:
With 1B users and queries doubling quarterly, AI-mediated responses are now the primary experience for a significant share of your audience. Citation inside AI Mode = Position 1 for those queries.
Google confirmed at I/O that "optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO." Strong technical foundations, combined with content only your team can produce, earns visibility across every AI surface.
Search agents launching for Pro/Ultra subscribers is the first commercial implementation of ASO. Brands visible in AI answers today have a head start when agent-mediated recommendations scale.
