01 — Scope

What counts as the GEO market

The GEO market covers tools, data and services that help organisations measure and improve how AI answer engines retrieve, cite and represent them. It was formally named as a category by Adobe's $1.9B acquisition of Semrush in November 2025 — the deal that put a price on AI visibility intelligence.

Three layers: measurement (tracking citation share, answer presence, sentiment across engines), optimisation (content, technical and entity work that improves those metrics), and assurance (monitoring for hallucinations and brand misrepresentation). Adjacent SEO suites adding GEO modules are counted at attributable GEO revenue only.

Market drivers
Zero-click acceleration

AI Overviews now appear on 48% of commercial-intent queries (BrightEdge, Mar 2026). Brands not cited lose visibility without a click ever happening.

Board-level risk framing

CMOs now treat AI misrepresentation as a brand risk. Hallucinations about products in AI answers have caused measurable customer confusion in B2B deals.

SEO budget reallocation

Only 14% of marketers measure AI search, but 43% claim to optimise for it (Conductor, 2026). The measurement gap creates the market.

Adobe/Semrush acquisition signal

A $1.9B acquisition explicitly framed around GEO sent a market-validation signal to every marketing budget holder globally.

Market inhibitors
Measurement fragmentation

No universal standard for sampling methodology. A "share-of-model" figure without disclosed prompt set is not comparable across vendors.

Attribution gap

Hard to tie AI citation directly to pipeline or revenue. Slows board approval for GEO budgets despite clear conversion data.
